A Tai Chi Journey

When I consider my Tai Chi journey, a question comes to mind. Is there healing in the practice of Tai Chi? In my life, the answer is definitely yes.
My journey began in December, 2009. A chance encounter with a friend of mine at church led to my first lesson. A number of losses had occurred in my life beginning in 2003; my son, my mother, my mother-in-law, my wife, my dad, and my business. Needless to say, I was on a recovery journey and seeking all the help I could find. The practice of Tai Chi for health has been a major part of the equation responsible for my personal recovery. There is spiritual, emotional, and physical healing in the various forms. Tai Chi is a gift and a Heavenly blessing.
My recent experience at the rehab workshop in Black Mountain, North Carolina was a highlight of my journey. An expression of gratitude is shared for my friend and instructor/master trainer, Richard Link, who has lead me on this journey.
Based on my life’s story, I can strongly recommend the practice of Tai Chi to anyone.

Tai Chi for Health and Me

Tai Chi for Health classes uniquely blend precise form execution and deep concern for participant who may be challenged to recover from accidents, surgery or other life difficulties. I am Maxine Starling Strawder. I began TCH while accompanying my 90-year-old mother to Tai Chi classes at her senior residence. For me, TCH instruction demonstrates new applications for breathing, balance and energy skills learned during my six decade of modern dance performing. My mother enjoyed the classes and confidence in her balance improved.
Today, I attend Richard Link’s TCH classes geared to transplant patients. Our class participants encourage each other towards healthy habits—balanced diet, regular practice of TCH principles and positive life outlook. At venues such as physicians’ offices, organ transplant reunions and area-wide Earth Day observances, we encourage community participation in TCH.
I hope to celebrate my 80th birthday in 2018. TCH is key to achieving balance in activities involving the arts, language learning, community activism and celebrations with family and friends.

Colors

Teaching Tai Chi is new to me, but teaching is not. As a high school teacher, you learn to monitor and adjust for the various types of students and situations. After one of my co-worker’s Tai Chi for Arthritis classes, a gentleman thanked me for wearing very white shoes. He could see my feet as I was going through the forms. The carpet was gold-brown carpet in color, and he could easily see my feet. He had Macular Degeneration Disease.

When my first class for TCO was started, two of my participants also had Macular Degeneration Disease. They had problems seeing the positions of my hands and feet. We made it through the first class, and I was frustrated. I had to do something that would make learning TCO fun and easier for these ladies. By the way, the carpet was light grayish color

So next class, I wore some navy-blue athletic shoes and yellow gardening gloves during the class. The ladies could see the position of my hands and feet better. Sometimes, I still will move to the left or right of the ladies so that I will be in their line of vision. Also, my clothing colors that I wear do not blend with the color of my shoes or gloves. My pant legs are rolled up several inches allowing the participant to see my shoes without the pant leg color interfering with the color of my shoes.
